Kemi is the seaport of Lapland, located on the shores of the northern part of the Baltic Sea, also known as the Bothnian Sea and the Sea of Lapland. Shipping lanes are kept open throughout the winter by icebreakers, and one of them, M/S Sampo, has been harnessed for the pleasure of visitors, offering icebreaking voyages during the winter season. Kemi and its neighboring town of Tornio form the industrial center of Lapland. Both towns are old trading centers, strategically located at the mouth of mighty rivers which flow from the northern parts of Lapland to the Bothnian Sea. Kemi has gained a worldwide reputation as the home of Icebreaker Sampo and the home of the SnowCastle which is constructed every winter.
When the border between Sweden and Russia was established in River Tornio in the early 1800`s, the ancient trading town of Tornio was split in two, and thus the town of Haparanda was born. Haparanda is nestled by the Finnish-Swedish border, easily reached from Kemi Airport in Finland (25 km) and Luleå Airport (120 km) in Sweden. This quaint little town offers a lovely setting for a visit mixed with culture and outdoor recreation.
In a nutshell Sea-Lapland, consisting of the towns of Kemi, Tornio and Haparanda, offers the best for Business in Nature: Europe`s longest free-flowing river and the northern Baltic Sea with its archipelago for boating, fishing, kayaking and river rafting in summer, and snowmobiling, icebreaker voyages and all the other active fun in winter that Lapland is so famous for.
Rovaniemi, the Capital of Lapland and the Home of Santa Claus Village, is just a stone`s throw from Sea-Lapland and a stay there can be easily combined with Sea-Lapland: on a one-day excursion you`ll be able to visit the most important sights and a stay overnight or longer will allow you for in-depth acquaintance.
Kilpisjärvi is located on the Top of Lapland, a tiny village of only 100 permanent inhabitants, nestled in the lap of the fell region of Finland, against the Norwegian and Swedish borders. This remote corner of Lapland is a haven for the nature lover - its beauty is breathtaking in any season. A holiday in Kilpisjärvi can be enhanced by a full-day excursion to Tromsa in Norway - also known as the "Paris of the North".
